The White House issued a stern statement on Monday, addressing the alleged involvement of an Indian intelligence officer in two assassination plots in the US and Canada, deeming it a grave concern. According to reports, the officer was linked to an attempted murder of a prominent critic of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the US and the killing of a Sikh activist in Canada.
While the Indian foreign ministry dismissed the report as baseless, the White House emphasized the seriousness of the matter and pledged to raise their concerns. Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, the target of the US plot, is associated with Sikhs for Justice, a group deemed unlawful by India for its radical activities.
India has distanced itself from the accusations, pledging to investigate the US concerns. Amid shared concerns regarding China’s influence, both India and the Biden administration are seeking closer ties, underscoring the need for cautious handling of this delicate issue. Canada’s ongoing investigation into possible Indian involvement in another Sikh activist’s killing further complicates the situation, with India vehemently denying any association.
