Consuming high-glycemic meals, whether in the short or long term, can notably influence facial attractiveness, as per a study by Visine and colleagues from the University of Montpellier, France. Published in PLOS ONE, the research reveals a significant correlation between refined carb intake and perceived facial beauty, as reported by heterosexual volunteers. Refined carbohydrates, prevalent in Western diets, include sugar, white flour, and various packaged snacks, often lacking in nutritional value. Increased consumption of these carbs has been associated with adverse health effects such as obesity and diabetes. The study suggests that excessive intake of refined carbs may also impact non-medical aspects like facial appearance. Specifically, consuming high-glycemic breakfasts was linked to lower attractiveness ratings, while high-energy foods during these times correlated with increased attractiveness. However, chronic consumption of refined carbs during breakfast and snacks was associated with decreased attractiveness ratings.
