Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has emerged victorious in an appeal overturning a prior court ruling that prohibited its use of the name in Brazil due to confusion with another entity. The Brazilian computer services provider’s successful claim led to an initial order for Meta to cease using its name within 30 days. However, Meta contended that it possessed the rights to its name in Brazil and stressed the importance of adhering to legal protocols, irrespective of business decisions made by external entities. While this decision can still be appealed, Meta remains steadfast in its assertion of its naming rights. Formerly known as Facebook, the company underwent a rebrand in 2021, shifting its focus towards the development of the “metaverse,” a shared virtual environment.
