Pakistan has recorded its first polio case of 2024, sparking concerns and renewed efforts to combat the resurgence of the virus. The affected individual, a two-and-a-half-year-old child from Dera Bugti district, Balochistan, has prompted intensified response measures in the region. This marks the return of polio to Dera Bugti after a 13-year absence, as confirmed by the National Institute of Health (NIH). Following medical examinations on February 22, the child showed symptoms of fever and weakness, leading to subsequent tests confirming poliovirus type 1. Health officials have swiftly initiated vaccination campaigns and heightened surveillance to curb transmission within the community. Despite global progress against polio, Pakistan faces challenges with sporadic outbreaks, particularly in areas with limited healthcare access.
