After a 10-day closure, the Torkham border roared back to life as hundreds of trucks resumed transportation on Tuesday. The border had shut down on January 13 when Pakistani officials implemented a new policy requiring passports and visas from Afghan drivers, triggering a reciprocal ban on Pakistani truckers by Afghan authorities.
Over 500 loaded trucks, stranded at the Pakistani side of the border, set off on their journeys as the crucial trade and transportation link between Pakistan and Afghanistan reopened at 10 am. Customs officials facilitated the movement of cargo vehicles following a resolution between Pakistani and Afghan officials in Peshawar.
The temporary exemption of passport and visa requirements for drivers until March 31 was announced, providing relief to those stuck in the harsh cold weather on the Afghan side. Following discussions with the Afghan ambassador, both countries agreed to ban truckers without valid visas from April 1.
Alam Jan Afghani, the first Afghan cargo vehicle to cross the Torkham border after its reopening, expressed gratitude for the resolution. Truckers and traders welcomed the news of cargo traffic resuming via Torkham, and additional traffic police personnel were deployed to ensure smooth traffic flow in Landikotal and Torkham.
