Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s much-anticipated debut web series, “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar,” has finally premiered on Netflix today, marking a significant shift for the acclaimed Indian filmmaker. At the Los Angeles premiere, Bhansali shared insights into his ambitious project, originally conceived as a film starring Rekha, Kareena Kapoor, and Rani Mukerji. He disclosed that the idea for “Heeramandi” had been brewing for 18 years but evolved into a web series due to its expansive narrative.
Bhansali’s vision for the series, set in pre-independence Lahore amidst courtesans and nawabs, has seen several iterations of casting, including considerations for Pakistani actors Imran Abbas, Fawad Khan, and Mahira Khan. Despite these changes, Bhansali expressed contentment with the current ensemble, which includes Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Richa Chadha, and others. He also revealed the extensive production process, spanning over 300 days, and expressed excitement for his upcoming film, “Love and War,” featuring Alia Bhatt, Ranbir Kapoor, and Vicky Kaushal.
