AFP reported that at least 50 individuals sustained injuries after LATAM Air flight LA800, en route from Sydney to Auckland, experienced a sudden nosedive. The Chilean-based airline operated a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, carrying 263 passengers and nine crew members. According to passenger Lucas Ellwood, the abrupt descent caused unrestrained individuals to collide with the aircraft’s interior, dislodging tiles and resulting in injuries. Chilean authorities attributed the incident to a “technical event,” with investigations underway by New Zealand air safety control. Boeing stated its commitment to supporting the investigation, amid recent safety concerns. These include a mid-air fuselage panel detachment on an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 9 in January and a tire detachment from a Boeing 777 jetliner last week, prompting an emergency landing in Los Angeles. US regulators have issued Boeing a 90-day deadline to address quality control issues, contributing to a 25% drop in Boeing’s share price since the beginning of the year.
