In response to the plea filed by advocate Jibran Nasir, a two-member bench led by Chief Justice Aqeel Abbasi convened to address concerns over recurring internet shutdowns. Nasir, a lawyer, social worker, and a candidate for the PS-110 constituency of the Sindh Assembly, approached the Sindh High Court against the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and others. The court swiftly accepted the plea for an immediate hearing.
Nasir presented evidence of internet disruptions on December 17, January 7, and January 20, highlighting nationwide suspensions of internet service and access to social media. Furthermore, he argued that sustained disruptions in various regions have impeded election campaign activities for candidates.
The petition underscores the adverse impact of unjustified internet shutdowns on the democratic process and seeks relief from the ministries of interior and IT, along with the PTA. The plea specifically requests an injunction against interference with citizens’ access to social media until the general elections.
In a decisive move, the court issued a stay order against any further suspension of internet services and directed the concerned parties, including the ministries and the PTA, to respond by January 29. The development reflects a commitment to safeguarding citizens’ rights and maintaining open communication channels during the electoral process.
