Several airports across the UK have revised their policies to enhance the travel experience for families with young children. In a departure from the previous regulations that prohibited passengers under the age of 12 from utilizing ePassport gates, families were often compelled to endure longer queues at traditional passport booths.
Following successful trials at Heathrow, Gatwick, and Stansted last year, a pivotal change has been implemented—children aged 10 and 11 are now permitted to use ePassport gates, provided they are accompanied by an adult. The trial leveraged advanced facial recognition technology embedded in the e-gates to verify passengers’ identities against the photos in their passports.
The positive outcomes from the trial have prompted several airports, including Bristol, Heathrow, Gatwick, and Manchester, to update their rules, welcoming this beneficial change. A spokesperson from Bristol Airport shared the news, stating, “Children aged 10 and 11 are now able to use the ePassport gates at Passport Control (10 – 17-year-olds must be accompanied by an adult). Please remember to: Remove your passport from any cover and have it ready on the photo page. Remove all hats and sunglasses in advance.” This development aims to streamline the airport journey for families and make the process more convenient for young travelers.
